Coincidence or destiny?

Chiu described her journey into the entertainment industry as “It could be a coincidence, or it could be destiny.”

Following her dazzling debut in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant 1973, rather than stepping directly into the realm of acting, she embarked on a different journey altogether – soaring through the skies as a stewardess for Japan Airline. “At that time, being a stewardess was my dream job, which allowed me to broaden my horizons around the world.”

Memorable Roles

Throughout her career, Chiu has portrayed numerous iconic characters, leaving an indelible mark on both the small and big screens. Two roles stand out as particularly significant to her. “One is Avalokitesvara (Guan Yin) in the dramatic TV series The Reincarnated Princess (Guan Shi Yin). This role is unusual. When I received the script, I did a lot of preparatory work in addition to the role to help me further understand it. I also felt a kind of physical and mental purification by doing so. I hoped to convey truth, goodness and beauty through that role.”

Reflecting her compassionate spirit, Chiu eloquently shared her empowering philosophy, “Like delicate roses bestowed upon others, their sweet fragrance lingers in our own hands. If you can do something to help others you will feel happy, no matter how much or which form the charity is in. Some bestow their wealth, while others selflessly invest their time and energy to uplift the elderly, children, and individuals with special needs. Even the smallest acts of kindness, like conserving water or picking up litter, deserve our advocacy and embrace.”

Words of Wisdom

Chiu remarked, “Today’s young actors mostly hail from professional colleges, equipped with a well-rounded understanding of the business. Such comprehensive knowledge works in their favor. However, amidst the current landscape teeming with opportunities, fierce competition lurks as well.”

To aspiring young actors and actresses venturing into the industry, Chiu’s advised, “Opportunities may not always be readily available, so it’s essential to avoid impatience while waiting. Continuously enrich and enhance your skills, never forgetting your initial purpose. The key qualities that make a great actor are being great and kind. Being an actor is just a profession, and every profession has its basic work ethic.”
