“Hello, my name is Anna. I’m a talkative person, transgender, and proud of it,” Anna Warinthorn’s self-introduction had us floored. Her confidence, built from years of working as a television presenter, was evident throughout our conversation. Miss Thai ACDC 2020 was extremely bubbly and excited to be on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam, especially because we shot her photos in June, the Pride Month.
The activist who strives to bring equality to the LGBTQ+ community
Anna Warinthorn grew up in a poor family in Thailand. In order to go to school, she had to start working from a young age. She attended Rangsit University and began working as a television presenter at TV Pool News upon graduation. Now, she is an entertainment reporter and transgender influencer in Thailand.
“When I was a child, it was not easy [to be transgender]. In the past, Thailand did not have an open view of gender diversity. Very few people accepted and supported who we were. Even our own family,” Anna recalled. “After graduating, I had to dress as a man to apply for a job and be accepted at work, even though I wanted to dress up as a woman.”
The sadness of having to hide her own identity crushed Anna while she was growing up. But she learned to face difficulties while pursuing a career that suited her hobbies. “I like to dress up and make-up”, she said.
Anna Warinthorn feels and understands the pain that members of the LGBTQ+ community face in their day-to-day life. As a transgender influencer in the entertainment industry, she has been battling the social perception of LGBTQ+ people. “I want society to treat all of us LGBTQ+ equally. This is not for me myself. I know it is not easy but we want to use our voices to promote equality.”
When Anna Warinthorn is not working…
…Anna spends time going out, shopping, and updating herself on new fashion trends. She also loves traveling as each trip gives her a new perspective on life. “I love to learn about the people, culture, and fashion styles of each place I visit,” she says.
Anna experiments with ultra colorful looks when shooting for this special issue of Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam. The colors seemingly reflect the rainbow flag of Pride Month. She gushes, “I’m really grateful that I can express myself and may be an inspiration to everyone.”
